Culture for tomorrow's world

 Mrs Mubarak awarded

AT THE opening ceremony of the Second International Nile Festival for Children's Songs held on 28 October, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak was awarded a medal by the Fidof Organisation in recognition of her efforts in fostering and upgrading childhood cultural services in Egypt.

The four-day event -- held annually under Mrs Mubarak's auspices -- took place at the Cairo International Conference Centre. Four others were also honoured for their contributions to children's culture -- veteran actor and comedian Fouad El-Mohandes, actress Lubna Abdel-Aziz, late poet and caricaturist Salah Jahin and the Italian Cino Tirotulla, a children's show host.

This year's festival, in which the children of 17 countries from around the world participated, had American actor Mickey Rooney as its guest of honour.

In her speech at the opening ceremony, Mrs Mubarak said, "It is indeed a delight that this festival is joining the ranks of the numerous other festivals and activities that address the Egyptian child. It is distinguished because it provides the Egyptian child with an opportunity for direct dialogue."

"Culture in tomorrow's world has become the language of understanding between nations. It has become the olive branch that extends the bridges of love and understanding between the children of the six continents, so that they grow up with hearts filled with optimism, goodness and forgiveness," she said.
