Gabir Higazi
AMONG the artists honoured at this year’s Alexandria Biennale is the veteran sculptor Gabir Higazi, whose work – in stone, wood, sometimes bronze and iron – is marked by ceaseless development and innovation, the dynamic relation between the mass he creates and the charged space which it occupies being his primary concern. Despite a number of easily recognisable characteristics – his lyrical style, the attention he pays to surface texture and the unusual importance he attributes to colour – it remains impossible to pigeon-hole Higazi or identify his work with any one trend or school.
