Nitty-gritty for all

Drawing on the resources of roughly 25 different websites, www.gotoegypt.com serves as a valuable reference for the Internet user interested in information about travelling and holidaying in Egypt.

For maps, city guides and information on tourist sites, go to "Excite's guide to Egypt," which also provides a fact sheet of suggestions on when to go to Egypt, where to stay, what the weather is like and valuable dos and don'ts: Do not wear shorts, tank tops or short dresses -- Do declare all your valuables when entering the country.

The "Yahoo guide to Egypt" is another site providing a complete resource guide to Egypt. There is material on the history of the country, the environment and the activities and events that are celebrated each year such as Ramadan, Eid El-Fitr and Moulid El-Nabi.

An interesting site linked to www.gotoegypt.com is devoted to literature on the country. If you click on the title "Books about Egypt", you will encounter titles ranging from the newly-published Guide to the Pyramids of Egypt, by Alberto Siliotti, to Fodor's Egypt '99 and Fodor's Exploring Egypt, to Tut, Tut, by Jon Scieszka.

If you want to make any reservations through the Web, visit the "Travelocity online travel agency". This site urges travellers to make airline, hotel and car rental reservations online. You are provided with flight availability and timetables, ticket prices, car rental prices and availability, room rates, and even travel bargain specials. Alternately, Oberoi hotels in Egypt has a special link at www.gotoegypt.com where you can make online reservations and get to know about special offers, frequent guest programmes, and conferences.

Not be missed is the link to "Miftah Shamali", the Internet's largest website focused on North Africa. The section dedicated to Egypt is well designed and full of information about getting to Egypt, visa and passport requirements, details of climate, safety, health, dining, money and shopping. It also suggests places to visit, such as Alexandria, Marsa Matrouh, Port Said, Aswan, Luxor, Hurghada, Mount Sinai, Minya, Beni Hassan and Siwa. Just click, and you're there. In fact, if you suddenly feel the need to explore any destination in the Middle East and return to Egypt on the same day, go to "Orca airlines", an airtaxi and charter service based in Egypt.

A link is also provided to "Egypt's information highway", the official site of the Egyptian Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC), launched in 1995. The site provides material on the government, tourism in Egypt, the environment, culture and economy. Through "Egypt link" you find comprehensive information about hotels, travel agencies, Nile cruises and a link to the Ministry of Tourism.

This site, www.gotoegypt.com, is loaded with information about Egypt for both the uninitiated and the native. Even if you're already in Egypt, go there.
