NEW YEAR, NEW FEASTS: Shopping is an essential part of the preparations for any Eid, especially for children. If parents cannot afford to buy new clothes and shoes for the whole family, they will most often go without themselves so that each of the children can receive at least one new item.

This year, the Muslim feast and Eastern Christmas will most likely come only a day apart, and the entire nation, it seems, is out on the streets and in the shops. Winter clothes are more expensive than summer cottons, of course, and families forced to stretch a limited budget to its outer limits spend hours gazing through the plate glass, or looking out for bargains in open-air markets like Wikalat Al-Balah. Under the 15 May Bridge, an entire street is given over to second-hand imported clothes, and crowds jostle for first choice as vendors holler out "rock-bottom" prices for the benefit of potential customers.

Meanwhile, those planning a day out at the Zoo or the Barrage gardens anxiously scan the sky, hoping the fickle weather will not take a sudden turn for the worse.
