Egypt's economy:
the priorities and the tools
As the Egyptian economy heads towards ever greater liberalisation
constraints still remain. The government is demanding a greater role for the
private sector in development while the latter is seeking a relaxation in laws
and in the general investment environment. Some groups have already
benefited from economic reform -- mainly private sector enterprises or those
employed in foreign companies -- but many more have not. And as
privatisation continues less educated and skilled groups face the threat of
