Omar El-Nagdi
A NUMBER of veteran as well as younger artists have been exhibiting work inspired by the holy month under the all-embracing title "Visions of Ramadan". Besides Hussein Bicar they include Omar El-Nagdi, Ibrahim Shakir, Amr Abdel-Zahir, Faris Mohamed Faris and Mohsen Abul-Azm. To varying extents, and employing a wide variety of approaches, these artists set out to celebrate Ramadan primarily as a cultural occasion, one whose human reverberations reach back through a vast historical and social expanse. Children holding their Ramadan lamps, old inner-city clusters of alleyways and foul carts are only a few of the subjects depicted.
