In this momentous photographic compilation -- an encyclopedic and stylish overview of the just-bygone century, offering some 3000 pictures that record, comment and illuminate -- it is possible to percieve humanity, at least the humanity of the 20th century, in unpredictable and fascinating time frames, as if frozen on the page. Yet the book offers more than an exhaustive record of 20th-century political history, capturing rare moments of insight. Left: Paul Cezanne looking content with a late Grandes Baigneuses -- a rare emotion captured by friend and painter Emile Bernard.
