ALGERIAN President Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika granted amnesty to fighters of the AIS, the armed wing of the banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), who have observed a truce they declared in October 1997.A presidential statement, issued two days before the 13 January deadline set by the government for the surrender of arms by all militant groups, said the amnesty recognised the AIS's decision to observe the truce and its efforts to "expose the enemies of Algeria and Islam". The presidential pardon followed two weeks of talks between the authorities and the AIS, estimated to include 800 to 3,000 fighters.

JORDAN on Tuesday announced it would set up a censorship-free media city near Amman in a bid to attract investors. Premier Abdel-Raouf Al-Rawabdeh said the government will submit to parliament a draft governing the functions of the "media city", AP reported. If it passes, media companies in the city will have full freedom of expression and the liberty to hire whoever they wish.
It is unclear whether Jordanian companies will be able to work in the city without subjection to Jordanian press laws.
