Two of Egypt's premier clubs got off to a flying start in the inaugural Al-Rehab soccer tournament. Named after Egypt's newest satellite city and sponsored by Al-Ahram organisation, the four-club international event saw Ahli pound UTE of Hungary 4-0. The Arab Contractors did almost as well, skipping by Dutch squad Rodda 4-1. UTE and Rodda are currently in fourth and fifth places in their respective leagues.

The championship, the brainchild of Al-Ahram, had four goals: celebrating the new millennium; marking the end of Ramadan; keeping some of Egypt's players in shape -- the league is at a standstill for over two months as the country prepares for the African Nations Cup -- and affording the opportunity for bench warmers and newcomers to strut their stuff. A case in point can be found in Ahli's match in which three of the goalscorers were first-year players.
The first-place winner of the round-robin tournament collects $20,000; $10,000 goes to the runners-up while team No 3 gets $5,000.
