EN ROUTE to Washington, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat stopped over in Cairo yesterday for brief talks with President Hosni Mubarak. Arafat updated Mubarak on his latest meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, "which resulted in nothing", according to the Palestinian leader.Arafat said that his meeting with Mubarak came at a time when "we need his valuable advice". The two leaders reviewed the faltering state of peace talks on the Palestinian track -- a result of Israel's delay in implementing signed agreements.
Arafat said he will ask US President Bill Clinton for "speedy and clear movement to push forward the peace process and Israel's implementation of signed agreements". He is also hoping to secure continuous US economic aid for the nascent Palestinian Authority.
Foreign Minister Amr Moussa told reporters that Tel Aviv's procrastination is "undoubtedly a negative move, which has caused dissatisfaction". Moussa cautioned that Israel's inaction "changes the general mood" -- that is preparing for multilateral talks and the Middle East/North Africa economic conference in Cairo later this year. "We should take a pause and reassess what is happening", Moussa said.
