The new headquarters will be located on the same site as the old, now demolished, building on Abdel-Khaleq Sarwat Street in downtown Cairo. The construction is being executed by the Arab Contractors, in concert with the Armed Forces Engineering Corps.
Declaring that the construction is a "dream come true", Nafie said that financing "came on the direct instructions of President Hosni Mubarak". The Syndicate itself also played a key role in raising the required funds, often ahead of schedule, Nafie told the gathering.
Construction of the old Press Syndicate in 1949 cost approximately LE40,000. The new building, covering 2,000 square metres, will cost roughly LE19 million and will be inaugurated in July 2001, housing state-of-the-art technologies and information services. The improvements, Nafie said, are intended to raise the professional standard of members.
Construction ran into difficulties, the most pressing of which was the subterranean water level. The issue has now been brought under control, Nafie said.
In addition an underground garage and the ground level, the building will include two mezzanine floors, five additional floors and a rooftop.
