By Madame Sosostris

Sosostris * Seeing the two large towers that house Al-Ahram Organisation, with a third one on the way, you must have reflected that we are very big indeed -- which we are, of course -- but that has never stopped us from feeling like one close-knit family. This was never more true than this week, when we all gathered on the 12th floor of the main building to wish our Chairman of the Board and Ed-tor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram Ibrahim Nafie a very happy birthday. It was really quite a pleasant sight to contemplate the large reception room full of well-wishers, and I must say that I was quite moved by the festive atmosphere and all the beaming faces surrounding me.

Happy birthday Mr Nafie

*More celebrations awaited me, dears, at the Conrad Inter-ational Hotel, where my dear friends renowned engineer Bahgat Nassif and his charming wife Nadia, and my other dear friends prom-nent chemist Emad Kelada and his equally charming wife Suzi, were celebrating the engagement of their children Karim and Cynthia, both aesthetically pleasing, both AUCians and both knock-out dancers. Karim is managing director of Dary Building and Decoration Centre and Cynthia is a 1999 AUC graduate in Political Science. Cynthia's dress, of deep red satin, was truly breathtaking, and glittered with a dazzling light as she twirled el-gantly in the arms of her handsome knight-in-armour.

* Well, I had to dash to the opening of an absolutely great exhibi-ion of documentary photographs by Iraqi-born photographer Yas-er Elwan, which is taking place at the German Academic Ex-hange Service (DAAD) in Zamalek. Yasser's photos have some-hing quite poignant about them and after you have seen them you will remember the faces for a long time. Yasser believes that pho-ography has the power to transport people from one world to an-ther and to channel information in a way no other medium can. Well, his work does, anyway.

* Then it was off to Rose El-Youssef's inauguration of a very un-sual exhibition, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the mag-zine's art gallery. Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and Rose El-Youssef's editor-in-chief and board chairman, our very dear friend Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, opened it in style last week. What a delight it was!

The celebration was attended by many, many very important persons indeed, including Minister of Information Safwat El-Sherif, Minister of Higher Education Mufid Shehab, Culture Minister Farouk Hosni, Al-Ahram's Editor-in-Chief, Board Chairman of Al-Ahram Organisation and Chairman of the Press Syndicate Ibrahim Nafie, Board Chairman of Al-Hilal publishing house and Editor-in-Chief of Al-Musawwar Makram Mohamed Ahmed, as well as prominent actors Hussein Fahmi, Adel Imam, Youssef Shaaban, Samira Ahmed and Ahmed Zaki.

The portraits, by late and contemporary artists, are of such em-nent personalities as Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, writer Ahmed Ba-aaeddin, and caricaturist Salah Jahin. There are works by painters Abdel-Aal, Mohamed El-Tarawi, Hassan El-Masri, Tad, Mohsen Rifaat and Heba Enayat. Rose El-Youssef was the school that groomed unparalleled caricaturists such as Hegazi, Jahin and George Bahgory.
