ON THE same day that Gazbia Sirry's exhibition in Aswan -- organised as part of the Old Cataract Hotel's centenary celebrations -- closes, Safar Khan opens a new show of her recent work, which will run from 14 February to 14 March. Full details can be found in Listings.
Meanwhile, one day later, and back in Aswan, the Old Cataract continues its celebration by opening an exhibition showcasing the art of Zakaria El-Konani, Aida Abdel-Kerim, Ali Dessouki and Abdel-Fatah El-Badri, showing works that run the gamut from hand-made glass to batik.
Dessouki's bucolic batiks, Abdel-Kerim's elegant ceramics, El-Badri's tonally distinct folkloric painting and El-Konani's use of pate-de-verre, a technique that involves the colouring of ground glass, could not be further removed from Sirry's expressionism. But then in its on-going exhibition programme the organisers of the Aswan shows have appeared keen to adopt a catholic curatorial approach.
