Veteran journalist dies
Galal Eissa (1937-2000)
Prominent journalist Galal Eissa died on Monday at the age of 63. Born in the village of Meleeg in the governorate of Menoufiya in 1937, Eissa rose to fame at Al-Akhbar newspaper, which he joined in the late fifties. In 1987 he was appointed managing editor of Al-Akhbar and moved on to become editor-in-chief of Akher Saa in 1993. In April 1998, Eissa was promoted once again, this time becoming chairman of the board of Dar Al Shaab as well as editor-in-chief of Al-Ra'i newspaper.
Eissa was also known for his activities in the Press Syndicate where he was a member of its council for several terms. A statement issued by the syndicate Monday night said Eissa will be especially remembered for his dedication to defending the freedom of the press, particularly during the battle against Law 93, which imposed stiff penalties for publication. Eissa's syndicate activities were curtailed in 1999 when he abstained from running for the council, citing health reasons.
Eissa is survived by his two sons, Hossam and Ahmed.
