ITALIAN President Carlo Champi arrived in Egypt on Tuesday on a three-day visit. His programme will include discussions on the peace process and ways to enhance cooperation among Mediterranean basin countries.
Italy is one of Egypt's leading trading partners. The total volume of trade between the two countries reached $2.3 billion in 1998 and rose by 6.5 per cent in 1999. Italy is also a major investor in Egypt, with holdings across a number of sectors, including oil and gas.
Cultural ties between the two countries are also strong. Rome is cooperating closely with Cairo on building the new museum at Giza while Italian tourists topped the list of foreign visitors with some 667,000 coming to Egypt last year.
