A very urban poetry
HANI El-Goweili, who has worked as a freelance photographer since 1990, spent a year and a half in Italy after being awarded a State Prize for Creativity, photography section, in 1998.
Life...& Signs of Other Things, which opens on Sunday and continues at Cairo Atelier until 5 March, presents a record of that sojourn -- back streets, moments of contemplation, solitude in the midst of the city -- in a series of finely modulated photographs.
It is his first solo-show in his home town, though he has featured previously in several collective exhibitions, including the annual youth salon, and for the past two summers has exhibited at the University of Perugia.
Not quite all roads lead to Rome. But if Life...& Signs of Other Things is anything to go by, we should be grateful that El-Goweili's did.
