LAST Saturday President Hosni Mubarak surprised many observers and players in the Middle East by visiting Beirut in a show of solidarity with the plight of the Lebanese people. A few weeks ago, Israel launched an offensive against Lebanon targeting civilians and bombarding key infrastructure sites in retaliation for Hizbullah attacks against Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon.

The first visit by an Egyptian leader to Lebanon in 41 years was warmly welcomed by both the Lebanese officials and public alike. To mark the historic event, Lebanese President Emile Lahud decorated Mubarak with the highest class of the Order of Merit, Lebanon's highest decoration.
During the four-hour visit, Mubarak and Lahud discussed the faltering peace process on all tracks, as did the officials from both sides. The Egyptian delegation, which included Electricity Minister, Ali El-Saidi, pledged to assist Beirut in rebuilding its destroyed infrastructure sites, including the power stations shelled by Israel.
