THE NEXT meeting of the Arab foreign ministers is going to be moved from the headquarters of the Cairo-based Arab League to Beirut, reports Dina Ezzat."Under an agreement reached between President Hosni Mubarak and his Lebanese counterpart Emil Lahoud, and after intensive lobbying by Cairo, an agreement has been reached to have the next ministerial meeting in the Lebanese capital as a show of solidarity with the Lebanese people," an informed source told Al-Ahram Weekly.
The two-day meeting will be reduced to one day and is going to be slightly advanced. On 11 March, Selim Al-Hoss, Lebanese prime minister who doubles as foreign minister, will be receiving his Arab counterparts for what is being described as a "historic gathering".
"This is a message to the world that Egypt is still the leading country in the Arab world. We opened the doors to Beirut at this very difficult moment," commented a high-ranking Egyptian official.
Energy talks
PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak yesterday received US Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson, who reiterated Washington's support for Egypt's policies in the Middle East peace process.The programme of Richardson's visit included meetings with Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Energy Minister Ali El-Saidi, Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmi and representatives of energy companies in Egypt. He is due to sign two annexes to the US-Egypt Energy Cooperation Agreement and address the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs and Egypt's International Economic Forum.
Mubarak is scheduled to travel to the US at the end of next month for talks with US President Bill Clinton and other leaders.

PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak has just had a second grandson. The baby, named Omar, was born to the president's son Alaa and his wife Haidy.The couple's first son, Mohamed, is three years old. The president received news of the birth on Monday night during a dinner he was hosting for visiting German President Johannes Rau.
Student march
IN A SHOW of solidarity with striking Palestinian teachers, more than 1,000 students marched on the Palestinian Education Ministry in Hebron on Tuesday. They called for the resignation of Education Minister Yasser Amr for cutting the retirement payments of their teachers by 10 per cent.Three students were injured by blows to the head as club-wielding Palestinian police tried to keep the crowd away and three other protesters were detained for questioning, AP reported. Later, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat set up a committee to review the minister's decision.
