A FERRY stacked with butane bottles crosses the Nile to the Nubian island of Suhayl at Aswan. An unprecedented nationwide shortage of butane gas has hit Upper Egyptian provinces particularly hard with prices shooting up from the official LE2.75 per bottle to LE20. ![]()
The drop in butane imports has been blamed on a hard currency shortage. In order to combat the black market that has developed in the wake of shortages the government is enforcing severe penalties on the unlicensed distribution of butane gas.
