The youngsters make a point

By Dalia El-Hennawi

YOUTHS from 10 countries tested their mettle in an international foil championship in Cairo.

A Spanish fencer foiled the host's game plan but Egypt nevertheless drew accolades following the Fifth International Fencing Championship in the under-20 category. "This has been a very successful and well organised international event," said Renée Rock, president of the International Fencing Federation (IFF). "It shows Egypt's superiority in organising international games." Rock's sentiments were echoed by IFF Secretary-General Mario Fabio.

A high calibre of world-class players was on show at the Olympic Centre in Maadi and a record number of entries took part. Players from Germany, Poland, England, Spain, South Africa, Tunisia, Kuwait, Morocco and Jordan -- 28 fencers in all -- converged on Egypt. Hernandez Javier finished first in the foil event, followed by Zawada Marcin of Poland. Egypt's Anwar Mustafa clinched third.

"This has been a fantastic event and a privilege for Egypt and Egyptian players to play with internationally ranked players," Mohamed Tahoon, a member of the Egyptian fencing board, said.

Following the tournament the IFF seeded Egyptians Mustafa 28th in the world, Mustafa Nagaty, who finished fifth in the championship, 52, Mohamed Adel 87 and Mustafa Nehad 102.
