AT AN EXPANDED cabinet meeting on Tuesday, President Hosni Mubarak reviewed Egypt's industrial and technological development programme to upgrade local industry and export products to bring them in line with international standards.
Information Minister Safwat El-Sherif told reporters that Mubarak asked his ministers to make technological development a top priority for improving Egypt's economy.

SUCCESSFUL PILGRIMAGE: Egyptian pilgrims began their return from Saudi Arabia on Saturday and, by 7 April, 288 special EgyptAir flights will have brought 65,000 pilgrims home. Others are journeying home by sea and preparations have been made at the harbours of Suez, Safaga and Nuweiba to receive some 22,000 pilgrims. Hamdi Zaqzouq, minister of Al-Awqaf (religious endowments), who led the official Egyptian pilgrimage mission, said that this year's pilgrimage season was successful "by all standards." The pilgrimage to Mecca, for those who can afford the trip, is one of the five pillars of Islam.
