Time for celebrating woman -- conferences, performances, retrospectives and, unusually, exhibitions. The Cairo art scene, which has lately been strikingly vibrant, seems to have wholeheartedly adopted the cause, with a series of exhibitions at the Gezira Arts Centre opening on International Women's Day and coinciding with a collective exhibition at the Picasso Gallery in Zamalek entitled Noon Al-Niswa -- the Arabic equivalent of "w is for woman" -- and showing an impressive array of women's paintings representing various stages of the development of modern Egyptian art from a luminously female perspective.
