Abdel-Hadi El-Gazzar Abdel-Hadi El-Gazzar
Marsam Gallery, on Ahmed Fakhri Street, Nasr City, exhibits small works by the late Abdel-Hadi El-Gazzar (1925-1966), offering viewers the rare and exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique mythology of this cultural icon. Tutored, along with his contemporary Hamid Nada, by the little known artist Hussien Youssef Amin -- a man whose contribution to the Egyptian modern art movement is astonishing -- El-Gazzar soon developed his distinctive, instantly recognisable style, in which Egyptian folklore, progressive socio-political concerns and intimate knowledge of Egypt's popular neighbourhoods, the inside as much as the outside of poor people's houses, combine to produce a stunning and inimitable impression. Worth more than one visit.
