Shomou' Gallery in Maadi hosts an extensive retrospective of the works of the late Hassan Mohamed Hassan (1906-1990), on the occasion of tenth anniversary of his death. Hassan is one of the earliest pioneers of modern Egyptian art. His contribution, whether in terms of his own paintings or the influence he exerted on generations of artists, has often been unduly neglected. Hassan graduated from the Egyptian School of Arts and Decoration in 1926, travelling to the US in 1929 and assuming various prominent positions at the Ministry of Education. He was labelled the "painter of historical, folk and philosophical epics" by critics. Hassan's concern with national and patriotic feelings, and his contribution to Egyptian cultural identity, are amply demonstrated in this exhibition.
