Mariam Abdel-Alim is an artist whose wide-ranging presence in both the exhibition space and the academic studio have resulted in an artistic output at once distinctive and popular. Her approach -- as evidenced by her most recent exhibitions -- largely transcends genre distinctions, opting instead for a smooth and flowing expressive charge that combines landscape and portraiture, oil painting and collage. The one predominant theme that has conditioned her work -- Islamic society and culture -- has therefore received a broad range of treatments, mixing the emotional with the intellectual in work after work, and achieving an altogether remarkable virtuosity.
