Akhnaten Centre of Arts in Zamalek is hosting a retrospective of the works of sculptor Hassan Khalifa on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death. The artist, who was denied entry to the Faculty of Arts and enrolled only after the direct intervention of President Nasser, kept his promise of staying top of his class for the course's four-year duration, whereupon he proceeded to advance his remarkably successful career, creating large-scale public statues of immediate appeal and raising the practice of designing medals, on which he engraved his visions for various aspects of Egyptian and Arab nationalist history, to the status of a well-respected fine art. The exhibition demonstrates the full range of Khalifa's rich and varied achievement.
