"President Mubarak assured me that he will take part in the UN millennium celebrations that will take place in New York from 6 to 8 September," Gurirab told reporters.
During their meeting, Mubarak and Gurirab discussed bilateral relations and reforms within the UN, particularly the Security Council. The two also discussed the next Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit, to be held in Lome, Togo.
During his visit to Cairo, Gurirab also met with Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and spoke at a seminar held by the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs (ECFA). Gurirab underscored the need for a stronger international commitment to de-nuclearise, particularly in the face of countries "who tell us they are for peace", but who are actually stockpiling nuclear weapons.
Gurirab also said the UN has a duty to support and work with the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) until the establishment of "an independent Palestinian state."
