By Nevine KhalilPRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak returned home yesterday from a three-day state visit to Spain. While in Madrid, Mubarak secured continued Spanish support for the Middle East peace process. Mubarak also discussed the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, hammering out sticking points along the Egyptian-European track of the Barcelona Process.
Boosting bilateral trade and promoting Spanish investment in Egypt were focal points in the president's discussions with King Juan Carlos and Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. Spain will consider the construction of an express train between Alexandria and Aswan. A joint supreme committee will meet in eight months to follow up bilateral agreements.
Accompanying the president on the visit, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak received a medal from Complutense University for her endeavours to improve the status of women, children and the environment. Mrs Mubarak also inaugurated a seminar on the history of Egyptian women during the past five decades.
On Tuesday, Mrs Mubarak will be in New York to address a special session of the UN General Assembly regarding the 4th general women's conference, "Woman 2000, Gender Equality, Development and Peace in the 21st Century."
