Lecture

On today, 1 June, a lecture at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute (NVIC) entitled "The Alexandrian Crusade (767-1365)" will be given by Jo Van Steenbergen, a research fellow in the Department of Oriental Studies at the Catholic University in Belgium. Van Steenbergen will talk about the crusade of Peter I of Lusignan, king of Cyprus, and his allies against the Mameluke port of Alexandria. The eyewitness account of the Alexandrian historian Al-Nuwayri (775-1372) will be compared with two other Mameluke traditions, as well as the story told by the French historiographer Guillaume de Machaut.

Lectures begin at 5.30pm sharp.

On 5 June, the Egypt Exploration Society (EES) will present a lecture on "New Excavations at Mendes: 1993-1999," by director of Mendes excavations Donald Redford. A professor Egyptology at Pennsylvania State University, Redford will focus on recent discoveries -- particularly new evidence on the closing stages of the Old Kingdom. The lecture will cover the Persian destruction of the city in 343 BC, and will cast new light on the cult of the sacred ram. More recently, Redford has conducted excavations at Karnak and Tel Kedwa.

Lectures take place at the British Council Auditorium at 7.00pm.

On 7 June, the American Research Centre in Egypt (ARCE) will present a lecture entitled "The Development of Art in the Fourth Dynasty: The Eastern and GIS Cemeteries at Giza" by Laurel Flentye, an ARCE fellow at New York University. Egyptologists tend to see Egyptian art as exclusively funerary, yet Old Kingdom sculpture, from the time of Zoser, had a certain grandeur. Although colossal statues are rare (or have perhaps simply not survived), but there are some stylised examples, especially of the king and high officials.

Lectures begin at 6.00pm. Refreshments will be provided following the lecture.
