The basalt head of a Pharaoh
photo: Christoph Gerigk

FISHING FOR TREASURE: The basalt head of a Pharaoh receives its first photo opportunity ever after centuries of lying undisturbed on the sea bed of the Bay of Abu Qir. Discovered by a joint French-Egyptian team that has been conducting submarine excavations off Alexandria for more than two years now, it is thought that the statue, along with a host of other archaeological remains from three once prosperous cities, was submerged sometime in the 8th century AD when earth tremors, combined with rising sea levels, caused the area to be submerged
