Extra Gallery, in Zamalek, shows recent works by Amir Shawqi, comprising portraits and still-lives as well as everyday scenes. Shawqi's early architectural studies echo in his work. Even in the most straightforward painting there is a logic of colour and geometry of form that condition the work's design, turning each painting into a visual clock, precisely and powerfully executed. At a more obvious level, Shawqi's attention to such things as furniture, windows and doors makes itself felt. It is, however, the hidden internal architecture of these images that make them worth seeing -- again and again.
