Lecture

Today, 8 June, the Netherlands-Flemish Institute (NVIC) will present a lecture titled "A Mummy Awakens: The Ancient Egyptian Stories of Naguib Mahfouz," by Raymond Stock, a doctoral student of Arabic literature at Pennsylvania University. Stock will discuss the presence of Pharaonic themes in Naguib Mahfouz's oeuvre. Mahfouz's first pub-ished book was a translation of a young readers' guide to ancient Egypt, and his first three novels were inspired by classic tales and events from the fourth, sixth and 17th dynasties.

The Netherlands-Flemish Institute's lectures begin at 5.30pm sharp

On 14 June, the Italian Archaeological Centre, part of the Italian Institute of Culture in Cairo (IICC), will present a lecture entitled " Development Phases of Christian Religious Architecture in Egypt," a fas-inating and complex subject on which Ibrahim Haggaghi, professor of Egyptology and archaeology at Tanta University, will shed light. Haggaghi will discuss the role played by religious persecution and the growth of monasticism in the development of Christian architecture. Haggaghi draws on three sources that have led to distinctive elements of Chris-ian architecture: worship in remote areas, the conver-ion of caves and shelters into churches and the build-ng of churches in various styles.

The lecture starts at 6.00pm

Trip

On 11 June, the Italian Archaeological Centre is ar-anging a visit to the monumental complex of the Mevlevi dervishes, built between the 17th and 19th centuries at the restored Sama'khana area. Under the directorship of Giuseppe Fanfoni, this well-known architectural complex lying at the foot of the Citadel is being restored by the Italian-Egyptian Restoration and Archaeology Centre. Perhaps the most imposing part of the complex is the Yazbak Palace, built and enlarged between the 14th and 15th centuries.
