Hafez Al-Assad
The late Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad's death has left the Arab world in a state of deep bereavement. His features are engraved on my memory: the piercing gaze, luxuriant moustache, distinguished aquiline nose and high forehead, its sharp lines softened by strands of fine hair. Along with Gamal Abdel-Nasser and Anwar El-Sadat, he is the symbol of an era that may come to an end with his passing.
