Among the artists honoured at the fifth Pottery Biennale is sculptor Hassan Hishmat. Hassan Hishmat's name has been bound with pottery since the beginning of his career. His attempt to employ indigenous Egyptian methods in such a way as to achieve a visual idiom comprehensible to the world at large led to departures from the initial practices he took on board, and he produced The Drummer, The Fallaha, The Dancer. Since then he has become one of the greatest names in the history of the plastic arts, and his being honoured on this occasion is a fitting tribute.
