To effect the link between the abstract realm of creativity and the concrete real world is at worst a commercial obsession, at best an admirable attempt to make art relevant. The textiles department of the Faculty of Applied Arts -- Helwan University's pioneering programme to put final-year students in contact with a private-sector textiles factory -- falls easily in the latter category. The programme allows students with virtually no professional experience to put their artistic endeavours to good use, and to see the interesting and unusual designs of their graduation projects on marketable fabrics. A commendable and much needed initiative to bring art closer to the everyday, with the added bonus of introducing variety and creativity into today's textiles industry.
