Saudi visit

PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak is scheduled to meet today with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdallah.

The Saudi crown prince arrived yesterday evening in the Red Sea coastal city of Sharm Al-Sheikh for a three-day visit. Talks will include the stalled Palestinian track of the peace process, the new leadership in Damascus, and bilateral relations.

Social success

A UN SOCIAL summit in Geneva is assessing the progress made towards eradicating poverty since the Copenhagen Conference held five years ago.

In her address on Monday, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, heading Egypt's delegation which included officials and NGOs, said Egypt's economic reform programme has been successful on both its social and economic fronts.

"The spirit of bottom-up partnership has permeated all our efforts to promote grassroots participation, expand budget allocations for social sectors, successfully attain the 20/20 objective, streamline the national budget and focus on support for vulnerable households," Mrs Mubarak said.

New approach

THIS WEEK'S meeting of foreign ministers for the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Kuala Lumpur will conclude tomorrow with a communiqué pledging closer cooperation and urging Islamic countries to take a role in shaping a globalisation-made world, reports Dina Ezzat from the Malaysian capital.

Malaysian Premier Mahathir Mohamed criticised Muslim countries for being "divided" in the face of threats from Western-led political and economic threats. Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, who headed Egypt's delegation, agreed. "We in the Muslim world need a new approach to deal with the facts of [today's world] as they really stand, and not as they seem to appear to us," Moussa said, calling on the 51 participating countries to improve communication with other cultures and cultivate awareness of Islam. He also called for an end to Muslim-Muslim differences and greater economic cooperation within the OIC.
