In the Mohamed Nagui Hall at the Cairo Atelier the Jordanian-born, Saudi-residing calligrapher Galal Amin Saleh exhibits an impressive range of works demonstrating various stages of his artistic development. An expert draughtsman, Saleh combines his astoundingly potent love of Arabic calligraphy with a deep sense of its formal implications, turning words into creatures, musical instruments, a bird resting on the disembodied palm of some unidentified person's hand. The formal perfection that Saleh achieves is but one of many reasons the viewer will find this exhibition stimulating. Other reasons include the questions it raises about calligraphy, drawing and the links between them.
