Billions for the environment

THE GOVERNMENT is expected to allocate LE100 billion for environmental protection during the next 17 years.

"The principles that govern international trade worldwide need to be applied to environmental safety procedures throughout the various stages of production," Ahmed Hamza, chief counselor to the State's Ministry for Environmental Affairs, said in a seminar sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

"The country which fails to abide by these procedures will hardly have any foreign trade," Hamza said.

Over the past 18 months, 34 industrial establishments have spent some LE350 million in adjusting their environmental status in compliance with Environment Law No 4/1994.

The government has also allocated LE26 billion over five years ending in 2002, for the resolution of long-standing environmental problems, including sanitary sewage, solid waste management, industrial pollution and environmental education.

Plans are being set to strengthen Egyptian organisations' managerial and technical capabilities by improving professional performance in the government and private sectors.

These include universities, NGOs and key development institutions.

The seminar, a component of the USAID Development Training Project (DT2), which was coorganised with Social Planning Consultants (SPAAC) was attended by around 100 people representing top management in government, public enterprise and the private sector. Held four times a year, such seminars are designed to address various aspects of management, leadership and international changes affecting the business environment in general and its impact on Egyptian organisations in particular.
