Born in Cairo in 1925, the veteran artist Gazibia Serri, who won the State Merit Award this year, graduated from the Academy of Art in 1949, whereupon she spent long stints in Paris and Italy. Teaching at the Art Education Institute for Girls (from 1959), she nonetheless produced a steady flow of impeccably finished and highly prized oil paintings, characterised by a distinctive awareness of her surroundings and an ability to draw on Egyptian culture without showcasing cultural symbols. The honour is terribly belated but nonetheless an exhilarating event, if only because it will generate more interest in one of Egypt's most remarkable artistic figures who is no less so for being a charmingly frail survivor.
