Children's account no. 55555

President Mubarak MRS SUZANNE Mubarak launched last Thursday a national fund-raising campaign for the treatment of children afflicted by malignant tumors. The announcement was made as Mrs Mubarak inaugurated a children's hospital in the Nile Delta town of Banha.

She said that the campaign aims to assist families who cannot afford the expense of providing treatment for their children.

Deposits worth millions of pounds have already been made in a special account -- No 55555 -- at the National Bank of Egypt. A cheque worth LE1 million was collected at a charity dinner in London attended by Mrs Mubarak two months ago; and a second worth $1 million was deposited at the National Bank.

The second option which was expected by political observers was that for the president to issue a decree, that has the force of law, amending the second paragraph of Article 24 of the 1956 law on the exercise of political rights. The paragraph was declared unconstitutional by the court, and analysts say it must be amended to clearly state that only judges can oversee polling stations, both principal and auxiliary. In its current form, the paragraph in question states that principal polling stations should come under the supervision of members of the judiciary while auxiliary stations are to be overseen by civil servants.

Mrs Mubarak applauded the good Samaritans in this country and abroad for their valuable contributions, saying that the money collected will be spent on medication only, and not to finance the purchase of equipment or facilities. She said donors are very willing to offer their money when they are confident that their contributions will be spent in "the right way."

Donors will be updated regularly on the progress and achievements of the project.
