Reclaiming Zeinhom

Suzanne IN HER capacity as Chairwoman of the Red Crescent Society, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak inaugurated on Sunday a social and cultural centre for women and the first phase of a comprehensive development plan for shantytowns in Zeinhom in southern Cairo. The construction of 348 apartments in 39 buildings has been completed and Mrs Mubarak presented rental contracts to 10 families.

"Restoring the Zeinhom gardens area to its original beauty is now a dream come true due to the transition that the district is witnessing," Mrs Mubarak said.

"The success of the project gives us a push to work for developing all shantytowns in the [Cairo] governorate since Zeinhom's development is a model in planning and execution," she said.

The idea of developing Zeinhom came to Mrs Mubarak after she inaugurated the Red Crescent Society's headquarters in the district some time ago. "The informal construction activities in the area attracted my attention. It was necessary that the Red Crescent execute an organised project to remove the unplanned constructions and replace them with affordable apartment buildings and launch a comprehensive development programme to upgrade the environment, and cultural, health care, and educational services."
