THE CABINET Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) recently implemented a project for predicting economic crises.
"The project's implementation follows almost a year of work in the field of predicting economic crises," according to Nagwa El-Shenawi, IDSC vice-president.
Carried out under the supervision of Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, the project evaluated a number of economic indicators provided by the banking sector. These indicators can be used to monitor the status of the national economy and to develop models for use in assessing how they might be impacted on by international and regional variables in a way that would facilitate the prediction of economic crises.
Possible measures for overcoming economic crises and averting them in the future were also examined as part of the project. "We examined several international models in this regard to see how they might be applied to a system appropriate for our economy," El-Shenawi said.
One such model examined by the IDSC was developed to explain the economic crisis which occurred in South East Asia during the late 1990s. Focusing on the banking sector, this model will be adapted for use in analysing the entire Egyptian economy within the year.
