ISMAILIA REMEMBERED: On 25 January 1952, at the orders of then Interior Minister Fouad Serageddin Pasha, the police garrison in Ismailia, armed with old rifles, resisted British demands that all Egyptian forces evacuate the Suez Canal Zone and engaged in a suicidal battle with the occupation forces. The following day crowds took to the streets of Cairo in a protest that would result in the burning of the city's most prominent ancien regime and foreign landmarks.
Today, 25 January is observed annually as Police Day. Serageddin, who led the Wafd party when it was revived in 1978, died on 9 August at the age of 90. He was interred last Saturday.
This file picture shows a British army stretcher-party, during a lull in the Ismailia fighting, taking back a casualty.
