Mission Impossible 2
A lethal virus and its only antidote are stolen from a plane just before it crashes into a mountain. Ethan Hunt's mission, if he's cool enough to accept it, is to battle the bad guy (Dougray Scott), win over the pretty girl (Thandie Newton) and bring the situation under control. So much for the plot of this second instalment of the TV-series turned big screen blockbuster, which was also written by MI1's Robert Towne (Chinatown, Bugsy), and stars Tom Cruise. This time Cruise is also a producer. The $200 million film features over two hours of over-the-top action which includes cliff hangings, motorcycle chases, and all the usual trademarks from director John Woo (Face-Off) -- slow motion kung fu, stylish outfits and bouncy acrobatics. There's also a cameo by Anthony Hopkins.

Around the galleries
Opened by the Egyptian ambassador to Austria, Sameh Shukri, and organised by the Egyptian-Austrian Association for Culture and the Arts, an exhibition of "Paintings from the Egyptian and Austrian environment" was held recently in Vienna. Representing Egypt was veteran artist and academic Mohamed Zeinhom, whose oil-paintings of people and places draws heavily on the Egyptian psyche and natural environment. Palm trees, village centres and indoor scenes combine to produce a sensation of homecoming, and in contrast to the Austrian contribution, create a well-defined vision of Egypt.Reviewed by Nagwa El-Ashri
