Given that these are the first elections in the new century and the first to be subject to full judicial supervision, one hopes that they will live up to people's expectations. The next People's Assembly, whose members will be voted into office within the context of the new world order, will have to cope with all the phenomena associated with globalisation. Besides dealing with the problems of their own constituencies, therefore, members of parliament must also be aware of the developments that are going on in the world around them at break-neck speed.
There can no longer be any doubt that these developments have an impact on every aspect of our daily lives -- down to the smallest, most out-of-the-way village, for in the contemporary world the local can no longer be distinguished from the global. And if world leaders are taking the initiative to confer under the umbrella of the United Nations in what has been called the Millennium Summit, our own People's Assembly members should follow in their wake, offering us, under the umbrella of parliament, not only a clear vision for the future but a similarly effective framework.
This, it must never be forgotten, is the millennium assembly, and it may prove to be the one we can count on.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
