A MONTH OF NATIONAL PRIDE: Today President Hosni Mubarak will deliver a radio and television broadcast to the nation on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the 6th of October War, which heralded the liberation of Israeli-occupied Egyptian territory. The brief address will outline how the 1973 victory made it possible for Egypt to re-organise its priorities, turning its focus from armed struggle to a struggle to achieve prosperity for its citizens and channeling more funds to development and economic reform.
Traditionally, the October War celebrations last for many weeks, featuring inaugural and field visits by the chief executive to key mega projects across the country. On Tuesday, Mubarak kicked off his developmental tour by visiting Toshka, one of three sites of Egypt's ambitious multi-billion South Valley Development Project. Some six million people are expected to relocate at Toshka in the coming two decades, once its 540,000 feddans are reclaimed for cultivation.
Before visiting the site of Toshka's main pumping station, and accompanied by a large entourage of officials, businessmen, media people and artists, Mubarak inaugurated a hospital at Abu Simbel.
