In spite of legislation, the practice of employing children has continued. To increase awareness of the importance of applying the law and its impact on Egyptian exports, the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) recently held a seminar on this issue.
Presided over by Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, the National Council for Women has expressed support for the plight of Palestinian women and people in the occupied territories. At a meeting held on Tuesday, council members also discussed preparations for the first Arab women's summit to be held in Cairo from 18 to 21 November. Women's participation in political life was included on the agenda.
In a press briefing, Mrs Mubarak said the meeting highlighted the support by the Egyptian woman for her Palestinian counterpart and the activities the council is planning to undertake to express that support. This included issuing regular newsletters, making the necessary contacts to work together with the Palestinian Red Cross and sending aid to Palestinian women.
"We hope the upcoming Arab women's summit will discuss means of advancing Arab women," Mrs Mubarak told reporters. "The conference will also take a stand to support Palestinian women and people whom our heart goes out to."
Mrs Mubarak said the summit will be followed by a fund-raising gala to benefit Palestinian women.
