Strong ties

PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak affirmed the importance of strong ties between Egypt and Libya in a message to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who withdrew his delegation from the Arab summit.

Egyptian Information Minister Safwat El-Sherif delivered the message on Tuesday and said that he is carrying back an answer from Gaddafi to President Mubarak. El-Sherif said that both messages invoked mutual intention to coordinate on all issues concerning the Arab world and joint Arab action.

Schroeder tour

GERMAN Chancellor Gerhardt Schroeder is due to visit Cairo on 28 October in the first leg of a regional tour which will also take him to Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Israel and the Palestinian territories.

During his three-day visit, Schroeder is expected to discuss with President Hosni Mubarak and Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdel-Meguid the outcome of the recent Arab summit and the role the EU can play "to support Arab rights," Egypt's Ambassador to Berlin Mahmoud Mubarak told Al-Ahram Weekly. Border march

JORDANIAN Security forces fired tear-gas and deployed armoured vehicles to drive back more than 30,000 anti-Israel protesters who had driven from all over the country to the border town of South Shouneh overlooking the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

Protesters at the symbolic march shouted anti-Israel slogans and rallied for the right of return of Palestinian refugees. The demonstrators urged Jordan's King Abdullah to open the border post along the Jordan River, which overlooks Jerusalem to the West, to allow volunteers to join the struggle against Israel.

Witnesses said the clashes began when dozens of anti-riot police prevented the marchers from proceeding to the town centre, first using water-cannons and then tear-gas. Injuries were reported on both sides. The government banned street protests after clashes earlier this month left one dead and dozens injured.
