Too close for comfort
![]()
THE UNITED STATES presidential elections proved yesterday to be one of history's closest races -- so much so that it was too close to call. CNN was the first to announce that US Vice-President Al Gore had lost the election and Texas Governor George W Bush had been declared the winner. Not long after, CNN retracted its declaration, after Florida state officials announced a statewide vote recount. Unsuspecting Florida, which holds 25 electoral votes and is governed by George W Bush's brother, Jeb, has thus emerged as the epicentre of this excruciatingly close presidential election -- it will ultimately decide the outcome of the race.
Gore took the largest states, California and New York. He also carried Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachessetts and almost all of the other New England states, as well as Washington DC. Bush took practically everything else, sweeping the Southern Belt clean from Virginia to Texas and tacking on the home states of both Gore and US President Bill Clinton, Tennessee and Arkansas respectively. He also carried most of the midwest and northwestern states. But, the unrivalled winner of this year's elections was First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who became the first first lady to win a Senate seat. "You taught me, you tested me," she told New Yorkers.
