EGYPT'S 100-year-old railway system covering the Delta and Upper Egypt is still a basic means of transport for the public. However, the state-owned Egypt Railway Authority is coming under increasing pressure to upgrade the system after limited funds have resulted in substandard maintenance and service.
Subsequently, the government has decided the trains will be renovated by both the private sector and foreign investors as part of its plan to modernise the Railway Authority by offering its real estate assets to investors under BOT arrangements. Shops and commercial outlets are planned to be set up in railway stations with the aim of increasing revenues. The government's goal is to cut down on railway operation costs while maintaining ticket prices at a level affordable to the public.
